Mytek is a manufacturer of HiFi and Pro Audio electronics. It will be returned after publication. Mytek is not a site advertiser or affiliated with Headfonia. Many thanks for the opportunity and generosity. Mytek Digital is an American company that manufactures high end electronics for the professional and HiFi audio scene alike.

Mytek has gained quite a reputation for their DACs and amplifiers. Mytek has a small family of HiFi products in their Brooklyn series. There are several digital inputs. A USB B socket to be used with your computer. This USB in put though double acts for stacking of multiple Mytek units, for the event that you want to run them in multi-channel mode.

Here comes the fun part, you can also route all digital inputs to be outputted by the USB socket and record everything with your computer. These can be used as line or pre-amplifier output. There is one more input on the back panel, a 2. This one accepts a command trigger from other devices in the chain to turn on or off. There are two word clock BNC sockets, one for in put and one for output.

We will go over this option a little later, when we find out how the Mytek performs with one of those. Front seated we two 6. The headphone ouptuts can be used either to run two separate pairs of cans in single ended mode, or it can be used in balanced mode with a 4P XLR to dual 6.

It would make connecting a pair of headphones balanced much easier in my opinion. However, I am not sure if they would fit in the layout of the front plate as it is now. The headphone outputs offer a zero Ohm output impedance, according to their website. I assume this means it is adjusting the impedance according to the headphones connected. Reply March 2, Linus. Some of these newer smaller DACs have a variety of integrated features from among volume control, a preamp for analog input, headphone amp, phono stage—and even amps and streaming, in some cases. I am grateful to Mytek President Michael Jurewicz for promptly sending me a unit for review. An amazing use of space. I will further elaborate on these various features in this review.

Jurewicz is originally from Poland, having graduated from the Warsaw University of Technology with a Master of Science graduate degree in Studio Electronics and Acoustics. Although Mytek began manufacturing DACs for home use only sincethe company was founded by Jurewicz in in Brooklyn New York, having already developed innovative products only for use in professional audio, such as for digital mixing in recording studios.

Jurewicz had worked in the past in New York recording studios such as the legendary Skyline Studios. Mastering studio in Midtown, Manhattan. What did I see scattered about in use? The headphone amp has dual headphone out that can feed one fully balanced pair via a special dual adaptor or two regular non-balanced pair, and the unit has two stepped attenuator volume controls one digital, one analog that range from db—0db in steps of 1db.

Turning the knob controls volume as well as cycling through 6 different sets of 4 options each displayed; 24 options total—enough to even satisfy professionals. Clever and efficient. The default color is blue; I chose Gold—that gave it a unique glow at night so I could quickly spot it. I was sent a black unit, silver is available too. As with the original model, firmware updates can be installed using USB.

There is no serious price increase over the original Brooklyn DAC. When I queried Jurewicz as to what he thought were the changes that made the most difference in sound quality improvement, he told me that it was a mix of them all the whole is larger than the sum of its partsbut that it was both the new DAC chip and the newly designed analog attenuator that he thought were the main contributors. He pointed out that: I want a clean and transparent sound, but not clinical sounding; it is a fine balancing act trying to get it right.

I believe that the new analog attenuator moves closer to that ideal. Worked like a charm.

Mytek Brooklyn MQA-Compatible DAC

And yes, MQA played flawlessly, too. More on that later. I have gained great respect for using a fine preamp for DACs instead of going direct to amps.

Many audiophiles frown upon using an internal switching power supply; but I think there is a big difference, for example, between using a regular computer such as a Mac mini for audio its internal power supply and implementation within the Mac mini were not designed for high-end audio versus an audio device in which a built-in switching power supply can be designed properly for optimal sound quality. Be open minded I say.

Interestingly, I also experimented with using just a high-end power cord Waveform Fidelity instead of the stock one, and that increased the sound quality of the system but not the headphone amp as significantly as did the external power supply. Outstanding transparency, clarity, soundstage, imaging, lack of distortion. MQA Master Quality Authenticated MQA is all the rage now in digital audio, and with the incessant heated arguing about it on blogs and such one would think it represents a political party.

Some audio companies offer compatibility for using it, while others refuse to deal with it.

I have met the developer Bob Stuart and listened to MQA files with him and greatly enjoyed the experience—and the sound quality. It allows for comparisons to be made on the fly and for one to form their own opinions by listening. Here, I give a small look at MQA in this context. But on the other hand, MQA folks also claim it can yield a superior sound quality SQ over the original PCM file because of the folding process and the way it is played back filters used etc.

SQ claims already obviously controversial, the process of MQA folding is not lossless—adding more controversy. To add insult to injury, however, in order to play an MQA file optimally requires hardware changes to be made in your DAC—creating even more controversy. It can also be done by software—but that is not optimal at this point-each DAC is different. You can imagine, then, why some manufacturers are not happy with MQA.

And the sound was divine; 4 was a lively and youthful interpretation with outstanding clarity of the piano containing the four pieces Chromatic Fantasia and Fugue in D minor, Sinfonias, French Suite No.

Reflections is mesmerizing with superb imaging and a tremendous range of frequencies displayed with such an out of this world level of detail. All played seamlessly and all sounded impressive in my opinion; although I would give a slight edge to the MQA versions sometimes on my hard drive, over the non-MQA versions, but nothing conclusive to me; something more musical sounding overall. But I am open to suggestions, new ideas and I have several friends always asking me for relatively affordable components, and those usually come with an Asahi Kasei or ESS chip inside.

Not a matter of cost saving, more of an intentional evolution. In fact, inside things are quite different. The new Sabre pro packs 8 filters, pre-loaded from ESS and ready to use at the touch of a button.

I went for magenta. Those last two options are very, very interesting. With selectable gain for MM and MC cartridges this is probably enough for many potential users out there.

I tested it with a few of my cartridges and you wont be disappointed at all. It is clean, with low coloration and fairly dynamic sound. As for the 12V DC input, I will come back later on because it is crucial soundwise.

The overall impression is of a very well built product, with quality components throughout, attention to detail and nice touches. This was not the case with my ASR so I left the output untouched. Once there with the new chip, that offers slight specs improvement over the already stellar ones of the older ESS Sabrethey decided to revise other parts of the Brooklyn design.

Actually by going through the list there is not much left unaltered. I have no reason to doubt them but I know only one way for checking their story. Called a friend who owns the former Brooklyn DAC and he dropped it by my place, along with a linear power supply. Putting the two DACs one next to the other, one atop of the other actually, was a revelation.

Not silky smooth, that was never the Mytek house sound but smoother yes.

The soundstage is also deeper, wider and taller. That was almost unexpected, as the Brooklyn was already among the best in class. There is no doubt this is a better product than the one it replaces. Not by a long margin, not a revolution but a clear step ahead, an evolution. And it gets even better with a linear power supply. Mytek is aware of this positive effect a linear power supply instills and while not offering one made in-house they do suggest using one for better result:.

There is some sound quality improvement particularly deeper base and better soundstage when a large external power supply is used. A small mention for the headphone section. On the manual a whopping 6W with 0. Unfortunately my can collection is limited in number, with nothing more than a pair of Hifiman Susvara, a pair of Abyss and a cheapo Superlux evo. The first two are extremely hard to drive and the Brooklyn pushed them up to a certain point. And even with the Susvara and the Abyss the Brooklyn offered very good performance, with good control over the lower frequencies, extended frequency response and tons of detail.

This is probably the most relevant market segment, the one that produces more sales and everybody wants a piece.

Slightly less priced and with similar extras, except for the integrated phono stage which is unique to Mytek, the Young sounded only a bit warmer and at the same time maybe a fraction more restricted in terms of soundstage. Both DACs excel in detail retrieval, a characteristic common to the other major contender of this price bracket, the Chord Hugo 2.

The Hugo 2 follows the lead of the already highly acclaimed Hugo with some added filters, four of them actually, that can mitigate some of the edginess in the upper octaves, and as per Chord tradition, offers a remarkable headphone amplifier paired with true portability. Different if not almost unique in this category the Hugo 2 uses a field programmable gate array, aka FPGA chip on which conversion and filter functions are programmed with proprietary, in house developed code.

Despite not having any major flaws, except maybe for that slight edginess on upper mid range, the Hugo 2 failed to captivate my imagination, it sounded a bit sterile through my ATC speakers. FPGA conversion is not the definitive cure for all things digital, not yet at least. The opposite timbre, warm and sensual, was true for the big grey DAC underneath the lot. If functionality is something you want then this is no DAC for you.During these unprecedented times, Mytek has made contingencies to continue to protect its clients and staff, in hopes of weathering the pandemic in the weeks ahead.

They both contribute to greatly improved low level detail and lower distortion.

In addition the output filter frequency has been increased two fold for lighter highs and to better accommodate difficult loads. Please email Mytek for upgrade request. Its dual mono design breaks the sound quality spell associated with Class D and proves a well executed Class D circuits can challenge the best Class A and sound amazing.

It's designed to be used as regular stand alone power amplifier or to complement Brooklyn DAC for complete modern digital streaming and vinyl playback system.

Mytek engineers with the lead designer, Michal Jurewicz, have demonstrated that a carefully executed Class D can sounds like triode, with beautiful midrange and depth while maintaining deep bass and fast transient and detail.

You can also set the appropriate gain for either moving-coil or moving-magnet phono cartridges. Another option lets you route the output to the headphones, main outs, both, or to auto-sensing.

You can also choose a digital or analog volume control as well as a full-output-level bypass option. Outputs include a pair of balanced XLRs and single-ended RCAs, as well as the two headphone connections on the front panel.

The pair of headphone outputs can be used several ways. You can connect one pair of single-ended headphones to either output, or connect two headphones simultaneously. If you use a Mac no additional drivers are necessary for full functionality. I used the Brooklyn connected to a MacPro desktop unit running the latest version of El Capitan with no compatibility issues whatsoever. The app can also perform firmware updates as they become available.

Brooklyn DAC remaining stock is being sold as well and available while supplies last. There is some sound quality improvement particualrly deeper base and better soundstage when a large external power supply is used. To have an effect the power supply has to be substantailly times larger than the 30W internal power supply. Here are some option which have been used by our customers. Mytek has not yet conducted testing of either of these.

Sign up for our monthly newsletter. After all, to describe this all-in-one preamp, streaming network player, DAC and headphone amplifier as 'versatile' or 'useful' would be something of an understatement. Rather like its namesake, which replaced multiple ferry services across the East River in to provide a single solution that made life easier for everyone.

The most obvious change is the addition of a streaming platform that makes it a complete, network-attached music-playing solution. Connection to the digital world is achieved through a conventional RJ45 Ethernet port, a Wi-Fi antenna 2. On the analogue front, the inputs are through unbalanced RCAs only but the unit's outputs are available in both balanced and unbalanced forms with the choice of either stepwise analogue or digital volume, or a fixed output line bypass.

The remainder of the front panel is occupied by a small but very clear OLED display, four buttons and a rotary encoder knob. The Brooklyn Bridge is controlled using these buttons and rotary, the combination used to choose a menu option, and change and configure the device's settings. Naturally, the wireless network connection is also configured via the on-board menu system the LAN input overrides Wi-Fi in the Brooklyn Bridgeand even extends as far as giving the user control over the brightness of the OLED display, the power LED and the colour of the illuminated logo!
